A fourth-generation Californian, James Coy has been practicing architecture in the Bay Area since 1981. After earning both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architecture from UC Berkeley, he established roots in Marin County to build his practice and raise his family. Over the past 44 years, James Coy Architect & Associates has delivered a wide range of successful projects across the Bay Area, supported by a highly experienced, full-service team that includes structural and geotechnical engineers, landscape architects, and interior designers.

James Coy is especially recognized for his skill in site-specific problem solving, bringing a rare blend of technical insight and creative vision to each project. Whether navigating the complexities of steep hillsides, irregular lots, or environmentally sensitive zones, he consistently delivers solutions that are both practical and elegant. His ability to assess a site’s inherent challenges—topography, access, views, light, and zoning constraints—and transform them into opportunities sets him apart. For existing structures, James approaches renovation with respect and imagination, uncovering new potential within the old, and seamlessly integrating modern design with the building’s original character. This thoughtful, inventive approach ensures that each project is deeply responsive to its environment— balancing design excellence with the individual needs of each client.

James Coy Architect & Associates proudly offers comprehensive architectural design and planning services for both commercial and residential new builds and renovations.
